The children of female sex workers inhabit two separate worlds. ‘Your mother is bad. The company she keeps is bad. Her behaviour is bad’: this is the child’s first world; while the other is: ‘My Mother.’
This quote by Meena Seshu from the introduction of Brothel Born and Bred: Children of Sex Workers Speak has stayed with me since I read it when visiting SANGRAM in 2009. I was glad to have a chance to use it in my interview with author Juniper Fitzgerald about How Mamas Love Their Babies, the first children’s book to include representation of a sex worker parent.
